If Mahakaleshwar is the heart of Ujjain, Ram Ghat is its calm breath out. Families gather on the steps, lamps float on the water, and the day softens.
What it is
Ram Ghat is the main bathing ghat on the Shipra River and the centre of the city's riverside rituals. During the Simhastha it becomes the focus of enormous gatherings.
The evening aarti
As the sun sets, priests perform an aarti with lamps, bells and chants. Visitors sit on the steps or stand along the bank, and many float small lamps (diyas) on the water. It is free and welcoming to all.
Bathing
Many devotees take a ritual dip. Water levels and cleanliness vary by season, so look at conditions first and follow local signs and guidance. Keep a change of clothes and a towel handy, and take extra care with children and elders near the water.
Tips for a good visit
- Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to find a place to sit.
- Keep valuables safe and bags small.
- Wear non-slip footwear; steps can be wet.
- Buy lamps and flowers from authorised sellers and avoid pressure from touts.
Making an evening of it
Start with Harsiddhi at dusk (see our Harsiddhi guide), walk to the ghat for the aarti, then return for a simple meal and an early night before tomorrow's darshan.
