Simhastha is Ujjain's own Kumbh Mela, held once every twelve years along the Shipra. In 2028 it is expected to be one of the largest gatherings the city has seen. Here is what we know, and how to plan.
When is it?
The festival is widely reported to run from 27 March to 27 May 2028. The main bathing days (often called Shahi or Amrit Snan) are reported as 9 April, around 23 to 24 April and 8 May, with additional Parva Snan days through the period. Because the schedule is still being finalised, always confirm the dates with official announcements.
What to expect
- Very large crowds on the main bathing days, with extra security and traffic controls.
- Road closures and diversions near the Shipra and the temple zone.
- Strong demand for rooms, often booked months in advance.
- Special arrangements such as temporary facilities and transport, announced closer to the date.
Choosing your dates
Main bathing days offer the full spectacle but are the most demanding. Quieter days within the period still offer the atmosphere with more space. If you have elders or children in your party, a quieter day is usually kinder.
Planning checklist
- Decide your preferred dates and a back-up.
- Book accommodation first, close to the temple and ghats if you can.
- Book trains or flights early, and think about arriving a day ahead.
- Plan to walk long distances, with comfortable footwear and water.
- Agree a meeting point for your group.
Why staying close matters
With roads restricted, a room close to the temple saves hours and energy. Message us with your dates and group size, and read our wider festival season guide.
Dates and arrangements are reported by multiple sources and may be revised. Rely on official announcements.
