Ujjain sits in the Malwa region, and its food is simple, vegetarian-friendly and generous. Whether you are fasting or feasting, here is what pilgrims commonly enjoy.

Breakfast

A plate of poha, often served with sev and a sweet jalebi on the side, is the classic Malwa start to the day. Hot kachori with chutney is another favourite, and you will find tea stalls everywhere.

Lunch and dinner

  • Thali meals. Dal, vegetables, roti, rice and a sweet, a safe and filling choice.
  • Dal bafla. Baked wheat balls soaked in ghee with dal, a regional speciality best eaten when you have time to rest after.
  • Simple home-style food. Many pilgrims prefer plain, lightly spiced meals during a temple trip.

Snacks and sweets

Expect namkeen, fresh kachori and a range of milk sweets and rabri. Carry a small snack for long queues, especially for children and elders.

If you are fasting

Fasting food such as sabudana khichdi, fruit and potato dishes is easy to find on many fast days. Tell shopkeepers you are fasting so they can guide you.

Eating well on a temple day

  • Eat lightly before early darshan or the Bhasma Aarti.
  • Drink water often, especially in summer.
  • Choose busy, freshly cooked stalls and avoid pre-cut food left in the sun.
  • Carry a few dry snacks if you have a medical need.
