Standing before Mahakal is the heart of any Ujjain pilgrimage. The temple handles huge numbers of visitors every day, so a little planning can turn a tiring wait into a calm, memorable darshan.
How the queue works
Most devotees join the general darshan line, which is free and open to everyone. Barricaded lanes lead you towards the sanctum in stages, with security checks along the way. On quiet days the wait can be short; on festival days it can run for hours.
Entry options
The temple has, at various times, offered different entry options, including priority or paid darshan and special ritual bookings such as the Bhasma Aarti. What is on offer, and at what fee, is decided by the administration and can change, so check the official website or the counters at the temple. Avoid paying strangers who promise quick entry.
Choosing your time
- Weekday mornings are usually the calmest part of the day.
- Late evening can be quieter, and the temple precinct looks beautiful after dark.
- Mondays, Shravan and Mahashivratri are the busiest. Allow extra time.
What to carry
Take only what you need: photo ID, a little cash, and your phone if permitted. Large bags and some electronics are restricted and lockers are normally available nearby. Wear footwear that is easy to remove, and carry water.
Making it easier on elders and children
Go early, keep the group together and ask staff about assistance. See our guide to visiting with elders and children.
After darshan
Walk through the Mahakal Lok corridor, visit nearby temples, then rest. A room close to the temple makes the day far less tiring.
Entry rules, timings and fees are set by the temple administration and may change.
