Summers in central India are hot, but many pilgrims still travel, especially around school holidays. With the right approach, a summer trip to Ujjain is entirely doable.

Plan around the sun

Do darshan and sightseeing in the early morning and after sunset, and rest through the afternoon. Many people also enjoy the quieter streets at those hours.

What to wear

  • Loose, light cotton clothes that still cover shoulders and knees.
  • A cap or cloth for your head outside the temple.
  • Comfortable footwear, and socks for hot stone floors.

Water and food

Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty, and consider buttermilk, lassi or lemon water. Eat light, freshly cooked meals and avoid food that has been left in the sun.

Health precautions

  • Watch for signs of heat illness, such as dizziness or headache.
  • Take extra care with elders, children and anyone with a medical condition.
  • Keep regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit.

Rest well

A room close to the temple is a big help in summer. You can return after darshan, cool down and head out again in the evening. Ask us about fans, coolers or air conditioning when you enquire, since arrangements vary by room.

Plan your days

Use the one-day itinerary or the 2-day itinerary and shift the outdoor stops to the cooler hours. For other seasons, see the best time to visit.
