Ujjain to Omkareshwar: Planning the Jyotirlinga Day Trip

Many pilgrims pair Mahakaleshwar with Omkareshwar, another of the twelve Jyotirlingas, set on an island in the Narmada. The trip is manageable in a day, but it is a long one, so a little planning helps.

How far is it?

The road distance is roughly 140 km, and the drive usually takes three to four hours each way depending on traffic and road conditions. The most common route runs through Indore, then via Barwaha to Omkareshwar.

How to get there

• Private taxi. The easiest option for families and elders. Agree the fare, timings and any stops before you start.
• Bus. Services run from Ujjain and Indore, though you may need to change and the journey takes longer.
• Self-drive. Possible on the highway, with some ghat sections near the end that call for care.

A sensible day plan

1. Leave Ujjain early, ideally by 6 or 7 AM.
2. Reach Omkareshwar mid-morning, have darshan and see the ghats.
3. Eat lunch near the temple and rest briefly.
4. Start back by mid-afternoon so you are in Ujjain by evening.

One day or two?

If you have time, two days is gentler: darshan at Mahakaleshwar on day one and an early start for Omkareshwar on day two. If you are travelling with elders or small children, consider overnighting at Omkareshwar or leaving the excursion for a separate trip.

• Carry water, snacks and any medicines.
• Keep your ID and phone charged.
• Check weather in the monsoon, when river levels and roads can change.
